Screenagers 2: Next Chapter, Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience
WellNSS and School Council provided a showing of this sequel to the very popular original 2016 Screenagers film focusing on the impact social media and other types of screen time can have on the mental health and wellness of our youth (watch the trailer). The film gave parents and youth strategies to deal with stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness and was followed by a Q&A Panel discussion with Dale Callender, Registered Psychotherapist with Skylark Foundation and in-house counselor at Northern. Teen Substance Use - Craig Currah, a speaker from CAMH, spoke at Northern about substances that are commonly used by teens, their risks, impacts, and how to discuss these issues productively as a family. Enrichment Opportunities - Explore a list of exciting and interesting enrichment organizations. Each of these groups were in attendance at the GAC hosted AP, Scholarship and Enrichment evening in Feb 2020.

With so many courses, programs, and post-secondary pathways to consider, students and parents may feel overwhelmed at how and what to choose for their timetable in February 2020. A Simple Analogy to Understand the TDSB's Proposed Changes to Education - Many people are confused about what changes to education are being proposed, what the impact might be and why or if they should care. This "food court" analogy is an effort to simplify the often confusing language the TDSB uses to communicate with into something everyone can relate to.

Concerned about Education? The TDSB is reviewing for key areas of our education system each of which could have a big impact on student success. Parents are being asked to give feedback to discuss the changes being considered, determine other options, as well as identify unintended effects for different people and find solutions. Why? Because making time for self-care enables you to be compassionate to yourself and more compassionate towards your teen.
Essential Toolkit for Parent Feedback - This toolkit was put together to help parents understand how to provide feedback regarding the Enhancing Equity Task Force (EETF) in 2019.
- GAC Study Skills A to Z - Improving study skills is an ongoing exercise, and it’s never too late to start. The slides summarize many suggestions to help students effectively use school time, get organized, and understand learning processes. They also include numerous study and exam preparation tips for specific subjects (i.e. math and science, languages).
