“How can I help my child do better in school this year?” One sure way is by getting involved...but what does that mean? There are many different kinds of activities that can help our students thrive and learn:
Interested Parent
Interested parents support their child at home and/or provide input to the school community and/or attend events organized by the school community. If this is you you might want to know about upcoming events or fill out our latest survey or send School Council an email.
Committees
This are where the majority of the work of School Council get accomplished. Committees are great for parents who have a passion, skill or idea and/or who like to help make things happen. There are a variety of committees that parents can join. Some meet regularly at school or other venues, others are just one-off ad hoc committees that meet to work on a particular issue. If this is you you might want to peruse our Committee List or perhaps email us to suggest a committee to work on an issue you are passionate about.
School Council
The School Council is the official school community organization bringing together the interests of students, parents, staff and community. There are 20 Members of School Council, elections are held in the fall. Meetings generally include reports from members (Principal, Teacher, Student, Committees, etc.) and discussions relating to matters at hand. The responsibility for deciding the business of council and voting lies with the elected Members of School Council with parents who have time to commit and a strong desire to represent, organize and/or lead matters of School Council. If this is you check out our pages on what School Council does and how to join School Council. Elections for School Council are held within the first 30 days of school and announced by email in the Principal's weekly updates.
Advocacy
Parent input into our school system is critical. For those that have interest in learning about or advocating at the broader policy or board level, you might consider attending and/or joining one or more of the many Community Advisory Committees, including PIAC (Parent Involvement Advisory Committee) and SEAC (Special Education Advisory Committee), or our Ward Council. Parents can also attend and participate in Public Consultations and/or attend the yearly TDSB Conference. There are also many private and not for profit groups that provide advocacy including People for Education, The Association for Bright Children, Fix Our Schools. Our Trustee is Rachel Chernos Lin and you can check ward 11 information here.
Volunteers
Volunteers contribute their skills, time and energy in the classroom or at school sponsored or community events or help with projects that enhance the school community. There are ongoing volunteer opportunities as well as one-off items.
