What we Fund

The School Council’s two roles are to improve student achievement and enhance the accountability of the education system. None of this is possible without your support & help!

We ask families for money once each year to cover all of the activities and events that School Council funds to enrich student experience and success. We use the money collected at the beginning of the year to budget for what we can accomplish. The Budget Committee proposes the budget based on historical requests, school surveys, and funding requests from students, staff and committees.

School Council helps students by supporting:
  • Buddies/NSS Mates - Grade 10+ students who help new students get involved at NSS
  • Breakfast Club - provides breakfast and food support so students stay focused during the day
  • SmartRisk - students dedicated to promoting safe teen driving & pedestrian safety
  • WellNSS - programs to support youth and their families on mental health matters
  • Clubs - too numerous to mention, NSS has more than 65 Clubs, all with staff advisors
  • Athletics - trips and transportation for teams to tournaments
  • Art, Drama and Music - production support
  • Workshops - handling anxiety, substance use, media use, study skills, etc.
  • Conferences - running or attending them
  • Subsidies - for post-secondary applications, prom, graduation, etc.

School Council helps the school with things like:
  • Eco-friendly initiatives
  • Vegetable gardens
  • Fans to cool classrooms

School Council helps parents with initiatives such as:
  • How to navigate Northern
  • Study skills for your students
  • Teen substance use resources and presentations
  • Course selection information and assistance
  • Enrichment and scholarship information
  • Presenting topical films like Screenagers 2
  • Special education support
  • Educational advocacy
This year, our campaign will accept contributions until November 11. Please donate through TDSB School Cash Online.

Our suggested contributions are $25, $50, or $100, but we appreciate whatever you can give. Every gift makes a difference!

Thank you for your support of School Council- for parents, by parents!

What We Fund

We support many very worthy causes. While the bulk of the money goes directly back to students of all grades, we do categorize our spending in four areas:

Student
Enrichment

Picture
We provide support for school-based organizations that benefit many students (i.e. Buddies, SmartRisk, WellNSS, NEMO, GAA/BAA, Co-Op, etc.) as well as for school-based extra-curriculars that benefit such as arts (Art, Drama, Music productions), Athletics, and Clubs (for new or existing clubs).  We also benefit students with needs (post-secondary application grants, Breakfast Club, subsidies for prom or grad). There is a limited amount of funding for individuals or groups of students who pursue non-school related merit based projects or activities.

Parent
Engagement

Picture
School Council hosts workshops, info sessions and presentations for parents on things like Scholarships, AP classes, Enrichment opportunities, Social Media Skills, helping kids advocate for themselves, and supporting parents of students with special needs (gifted/LD/DHH). These funds also cover much smaller items such as volunteer supplies, name tags, babysitting, translating, classroom rental, police check subsidies and the minimal cost of this website.

Teacher Engagement

Picture
This includes teacher "lunch and learns" as well as our annual teacher thank you activities.

Environment Enrichment

Picture
We help fund the purchase of allowable additional classroom equipment, allowable improvements to the building (we are very limited in what we can do to the physical plant), and a subscription to facilitate ongoing surveys of parents, teachers and students to get input for what activities School Council should focus on.
